July’s Program Meeting topic, “Writing about our ancestors,” will be given by Dawn Thurston.
Dawn Thurston will present a program on writing your book to define your ancestors. Dawn previously presented a program on including yourself in your book. This expands how to include ancestors.
Speaker Biography

Dawn Thurston
Dawn Thurston’s person history writing classes have been described as “life changing” and “the class I’ve long been looking for”.
In the last fifteen years, she has helped hundreds of students write and publish their life stories at Santiago Canyon College in Orange, California, where she received the “Faculty Excellence Award” in 2008. She has also shared her expertise with students at the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and at genealogy conferences around the country. Dawn’s students repeatedly win top prizes in family history writing competitions.
In 2007, Signature Books published a book she co-authored with her husband, Breathe Life into Your Life Story: How to Write a Story People Will WANT to Read, a compilation of ideas and techniques she uses in her classes.
Dawn lives in Orange County and earned her bachelor’s degree in English from UCLA, and a master’s in communications from California State University, Fullerton. Dawn is a member of the Genealogy Speakers Guild, the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors, and serves on the board of the Association of Personal Historians.
