Backup Your Data Day
“Establish a specific time and date to back up your data and stick with the plan. If it’s on your calendar, you are regularly aware of it as a priority.”

The Importance of Data Backups
By Kim Ward, NSDCGS Newsletter Editor

I was prompted by Thomas MacEntee’s article at Geneablogers, …to spread the word about the importance of data backups for genealogists and family historians and to mention it in our genealogical society newsletter. So here it is:

When was the last time you backed up your genealogical data? Do you do it regularly? Do you have a program that reminds you? Or, is it something you keep putting off? Is this something you are going to regret once disaster strikes? Unfortunately, bad things do happen, disasters occur, hard drives crash, wildfires consume, and floods can wet a lot of things. What are you waiting for?

Follow these steps to get going on backing up your precious data.

DON’T PUT OFF BACKING UP YOUR DATA! Establish your plan and then get going on it. It does not have to include every last scrap of evidence you have gathered over the last 20 years, but start with the most critical. Ask yourself, “Is this replaceable?”

TAKE CARE OF THE OTHER STUFF – Think about securing other items such as paper documents and photos in archival acid-free and waterproof containers. If your family archives are stored in your home, try to store them in an area of the house that is most comfortable. Family rooms or living rooms tend to have the more stable/moderate temperatures because that’s where we want to hang out. If possible, papers, film, and photos should not be stored in the garage, attic, or basement if these areas are not temperature and humidity controlled.

PLAN TO SCAN – Establish a plan to scan your paper items for digital backup. For some, it may be impossible to scan everything in one sitting, so schedule “one bite” at a time. Set this up as part of your scan plan: month #1 – scan and archive Family A, or scan and archive photos in shoebox #1, etc. A large job such as this is easier to accomplish when broken into bite-size pieces….
