The annual luncheon will be held on December 13 at the Lake San Marcos Country Club, 1750 San Pablo Drive, San Marcos.

Social hour is from 11:00-11:30; while the luncheon buffet begins at 11:30.

Amy Davis has worked at the Cole Library for 8 years. She worked for about four years in Genealogy, and has worked the last two-and-a-half years in the Carlsbad History Room. After receiving her Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, she applied for and was hired as the librarian in the history room.

She received her B.A. in Fine Art from UC Santa Cruz. A mother of one child, Lauren, she spends her free time reading, playing games, going to cultural events, and doing genealogy.

There will be a short case study entitled “Do I Have the Right John?” presented by Fred Spong.

“Digital Photography for the Genealogist” will be presented by Alice Volkert.

The program includes a short description of the Civil War’s effects on the country, (not including how the war started and President Lincoln), two civil war uniforms (but no weapons), the speaker’s ancestors’ medal and how he obtained it. Also includes a description of Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, an organization to which the speaker belongs, and a question-and-answer period.

Tom Helmentoler was born in Illinois but raised since the age of 5 in Encinitas, graduating from San Dieguito High School, Palomar College, and SDSU. He has a master’s from Pepperdine University. Tom taught for 36 years at Julian High School, retiring in 2005. He found his Civil War ancestors in 1999, became active in the Sons in 2000. He is a Past Camp Commander and currently Chaplain. He is active in the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge and the California State Military Reserve. Tom is married to Sandy, a retired school teacher.
