Computer Genealogy Group Meeting (CoGG)

Today’s presentation is “Doing Name Indexing of Foreign Language Documents,” by Douglas A. McOmber.

Douglas McOmber

  • A quick review of name indexing–what it is and how it is done.
  • A demonstration of actual name indexing of foreign language documents in Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese (if available) and German. And if somebody finds that indexing in English is “foreign” to them, we will do a document in English, too–something old with challenging cursive script.

Speaker Biography

  • Born in 1945 in Pocatello, Idaho.
  • Lived in Idaho, Utah, California, Maryland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan.
  • Contract translation of various Chinese books and articles for SAIC (Science Applications International), 2002 to present.
  • Field operations language analyst, National Security Agency, Hawaii, 1996-2002.
  • Chinese language analyst, National Security Agency, Maryland, 1981-1996
  • Lecturer in Chinese, University of California at Berkeley, 1980-1981

Wife, Cliffie McOmber, two children and five grandchildren.
Our daughter and her family live in San Jose, California.
Our son and his family live in Mililani, Hawaii

Interests: History, literature, religion, foreign languages, political economics, gardening, woodworking, and genealogy.

About CoGG: This is a special interest group of the NSDCGS. CoGG programs focus on computer and internet issues, research and tools, relating to Genealogy. The CoGG speakers will enhance our computer experience in finding our families and piecing together their lives. Open to all levels of computer/genealogy experience.
