Carrie’s Letters: Bringing Ancestral Letters to Life
Debby Warner Anderson
What would you do with a box of ancestral family letters? Several years ago Debby realized that her father had a shoebox full of letters written by her great-grandmother Carrie Terry Warner. What a tremendous find! Thus began her seven-year journey of determining what to do with these letters.
After reading them, Debby wondered how to make them meaningful for other family members. She will take us with her as she recounts what that journey entailed and how she made the letters come alive and become much more meaningful then she ever believed they could be when she first held them. Included are tips from her experiences with transcription, researching people and events mentioned, digitization, preservation and publishing them to share with family.
Debby has been interested and involved in genealogy since her early teens. She remembers listening to her grandmother tell stories about various family members and wanting to learn more. Debby has been a member of the San Diego Genealogical Society for many years, served as Secretary for two terms and presented this talk to that group last year. In November, 2015 she launched her blog (Debby’s Family Genealogy Blog) with the help of fellow blogger Diane Gould Hall and was featured in GeneaBloggers “May I Introduce to You” (April 14, 2016).
We welcome your participation to join in the sharing and/or present a brief case study! If you would like time to share at the member’s meeting or present a brief case study, you may contact our Program Chair, Jean Tempke, in advance, at firstname.lastname@example.org. Jean also welcomes volunteers to present topics of general genealogical interest to the members at large or a case study, either must be about an hour in length plus a few minutes for questions.
The Society sponsors coffee & sweets preceding each meeting. Please join us in the coffee room; on the left, inside the chamber. Note: only water is allowed in the chamber.
