Todays Topic: Quaker Records for Genealogy, presented by Jean Tempke
If you’re lucky enough to have ancestors who were members of the Religious Society of Friends (aka Quakers), you have a wealth of records available to you for genealogy research. And even if your ancestors weren’t Quakers, you might find them mentioned if they had Quaker neighbors. Quaker records include marriage certificates; birth, death and burial registers; transfers between meeting houses and miscellaneous disciplinary and business items. Many records are available online, on microfilm from the Family History Library or in a set of transcriptions at the Cole Library in Carlsbad. This presentation will cover some brief history, an overview of the tenets of the faith that impact records, the organization of the Society, the types of records generated and how to find them.
Jean Tempke starting doing genealogy research seriously about 12 years ago, partly because she wanted to find out who the people were in some old family pictures. Her ancestry is Scottish, Welsh and Dutch, with U.S. ancestors concentrated in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. This includes a whole branch of Philadelphia Quakers that she didn’t know about until years after she moved from Pennsylvania to California. Luckily she gets back to Pennsylvania at least once a year to visit family – and to work in some genealogy research! Jean retired as a pharmaceutical R&D project manager in 2008. She served as Secretary for NSDCGS for four years and is now in her third year as Program Chair.
