DNA Foundations

Home » DNA Foundations

After the tremendous growth and success of the original DNA Interest Group (DIG), NSDCGS felt it was the right time to launch specialized DNA Foundations Class.  This class is designed to give a ground floor introduction into what DNA is, how to interpret your results, and why genetic genealogy is the fastest growing component of genealogy today.

This class is not offered at this time, please check back later.

FAQ

What if I haven’t had my DNA tested?

That’s ok! This group will be both lecture and workshop based and will have examples to work from.

Do I have to test at Ancestry?

There are many direct to consumer DNA testing companies on the market. Ancestry, as well as 23&me, Family Tree DNA, My Heritage, and Living DNA will all be discussed within the topics of this class. As the companies vary in terms of the tools and tests they offer, we advise testing at the company that best suits your needs.

I don’t have or don’t know anything about my family tree – is that ok?

The beginning is a great place to start and that’s what we are here to help you with. We understand the number of reasons why someone may have difficulty constructing their family tree and will do our best to provide functional examples for those participants who are at various points in their research to ensure topics are thoroughly illustrated.

If I am brand new to DNA, can I still attend the NSDCGS DNA Interest Group without taking a DNA Foundations Class?

Yes – and we encourage it! Even if you attend a lecture and feel as though you don’t understand everything being discussed, our post lecture workgroups and networking opportunities make it an important “take home” experience.
