April 25, National DNA Day commemorates the successful completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 and the discovery of DNA’s double helix in 1953. In this presentation, we will take a look at a variety of human traits that are exhibited in each of you and the basic relationship to your DNA.
Ron Velarde received a B.S. degree in Marine Biology from California State University, Long Beach in 1976. After additional academic education and hands-on-experience in taxonomy, he accepted a Marine Biologist position with the City of San Diego which turned into a 36-year career! A perfect day was 8 hours on the microscope identifying the benthic invertebrates, especially polychaete worms, as required monitoring of the effects of the sewage outfall discharge off Point Loma. The development of techniques using DNA for the identification of “cryptic” species and the higher classification of invertebrates led to a new interest in the use of DNA for taxonomy, and subsequently genealogy.
