Join us for a ten-week writing class focusing on memoir writing led by NSDCGS member Jo Tipton.
We hope to have lively discussions about the art and practice of memoir writing.
A memoir does not need to be chronological nor should it read like an autobiography. It centers on an
event or theme and is meant to inspire. A memoir contains two key elements: the truth of what
happened and its ongoing significance in your life. It illustrates a common experience and leaves the
reader to ponder.
The class is designed for the participants to share their writings and to have fun—no critiquing
allowed. Although there is a suggested topic for each week, participants may write about anything
they choose. By the end of the class, participants will have ten memoir essays.
Topic for Week One:
An event that occurred in one single hour of your life that you will never forget.
Bring your essay to the first class. The memoir should run 1½ to 2½ typewritten pages. Don’t wait to start; schedule times to write; write every day.
Registration is required.
Because this is a popular class and space is limited, registration is required. Please register by emailing Mary Millet at memoirs@nsdcgs.org by June 13, 2025.
